2009 Chicago Toy Soldier Show

Trevin and I attended the 2009 Chicago Toy Soldier Show in Schaumburg, IL on September 27, 2009. What can I say we loved it. Tons of dealers, lot's of great history and toy army conversations, and tons of toy army soldiers. The show started at 10:00am. When we got there at 9:50am, the line to get in was already about 100 people deep. The cost was only $7 and after we paid admission, we were immediately given some goodies- bag for shopping and a valuable toy army. We haven't even stepped in and we've already paid the price of admission.

We did notice a few things. The German Army from World War 2 seems to be the most popular selling items followed by World War armys from other countries like the USA and Britain. There were also no Lego soldiers sold. This gave us a great idea, that maybe next year we can have BrickBattleField sell at the Chicago Toy Soldier Show. We'll see what happens.

Lego.com offers free shipping for a limited time

The Lego.com online store has a new free shipping deal. They will give free domestic standard shipping for oders of $75 or more from now until October 12, 2009. Those Lego nuts may want to take advantage of this special offer. Lego does not do this kind of deal too often.

Brick Link Does Not Sell New Lego Items

After browsing through the BrickLink's website, I noticed that BrickLink stores do not sell any new item that is currently sold on Lego.com. For example, if you wanted to buy a Straight and CrossRoads Basplate on BrickLink, you won;t be able to.

BrickLink does not even give store owners an option of adding those items. I can understand, why they do nto want to compete directly with Lego.com.

Container Store Lego bins

We went to the Container Store in Northbrook, IL and purchased the above two items. They are mobile containers that we are going to use to hold our initial inventory of Lego items. The top picture (Item #1) will be used to hold flat Legos like Lego baseplates. I like Item #2. It will be used to hold small Lego parts like individual Lego bricks, Lego weapons, and Lego accessories like Spruce Trees.

Look out for future blog posts. I'd like to show you pictures of the containers in actual use and filled with Lego inventory.

Lessons Learned from Decal Application Project

The other day, I did my very first Lego Decal Application project. I learned a couple of lessons from doing it:

Time. It takes a lot of time even to apply one decal. There are so many steps that are required, so many applications, so much waiting timed. All of these steps are extremely important. One mis-step and the min-fig may not turn out to a good quality level .

Exact cutting. The decals have to fit exactly on the torso. If it is just even slightly too big, the decal will overlap on the sides and you will see the decal, thus producing a poor quality mini-fig.

Re-assembly. The mini-fig needs to be reassembled after the application of the overcoat. Make sure the overcoat and everything is completely dry or else the decal maybe damaged. Also, it is difficult to reassemble the arms. My 9 year old did not have the strength or ability to snap tight the arms again. It takes just the right amount of force at the right spot.

New Lego Green Army Men Announced at Comi-Con

The coolest-toy blog had an update at the Lego booth at the 2009 Comicon Convention in San Diego. Lego will likely be releasing green toy army men (left- picture courtesy Coolest-Toy Blog) in 2010 as part of a new line of Toy Soldier Lego sets.

Lego Decal Application Project

I am going to do a test project of creating my own Lego mini-fig. I already have the blank mini-figs and accessories. The next and probably the hardest step is to apply a decal to the torso of the mini-fig. Thanks to fineclonier, they have already designed the decal. To the left is a picture of a 101st Airborne Decal downloaded (legally and for free per the Fineclonier website; we will use the decal strictly for practice in applying decals and not to sell the mini-fig). Next steps is to actually print it out on decal paper and practice applying.

Decal Paper
For this project I am going to use Testor brand clear decal paper. I bought a pack of 6 sheets sized 5.5" x 8.5" for $9.99 at the local hobby shop. This decal paper is specifically designed for ink jet printers - which I have at home.

Decal Bonder
After printing the decals on the decal paper the next step is to apply a light coat of decal bonder to to the decals. In this case I used Testor Brand decal bonder. I bought a 3 oz can at Hobby Lobby for $4.99. 3 oz may not sound like a lot, but you only use a light spray per application. The 3 oz can should last for a very long time. I applied the spray outside to leave out any spray residue inside my house. The instructions then called to wait two hours to allow the bonder to dry. This bonder is supposedly used to hold the ink together when sliding it off the backing paper of the decal.

Decal Application
After the decal has dried for about two hours your are now ready to apply the decal. The first step is to disassemble the torso of the mini-fig. Then, take the decal and dip it into filtered water. It is important to just dip it slightly not completely soak it for a long time or else the decal will loosen up. After dipping it set is aside to dry for about 30 seconds. While it is drying dip the torso with a damp Q-Tip to moisten the surface. You are now ready to apply the decal carefully onto the torso. Apply the decal by picking it up with a tweezer and then carefully sliding the backing. Be careful in sliding the backing and do it quickly because of you wait too long the decal may dry out and be difficult to apply. After the decal is in place apply decal setting solution with a paint brush.

With over 500,000 visitors monthly, MocPages is truly a popular site. Most importantly, it has some of the coolest World War 2 Lego creations out there. The other day I visited my local Lego store in Northbrook, IL. I wanted to buy some Legos for my son. Unfortunately they did not have what I was looking for. So I thought I was out of luck. Fortunately, a store employee showed me another option. She said I could browse through Lego.com and if the product that I wanted was in their online catalog, then they could order it and get it delivered to the store - for get this free shipping. What this means, is that if you are the type of person that buys lot's of Legos online, you can now save on shipping costs.

Prototypes

BrickBattleField.com is working on a few prototypes that we hope to display soon. The first set of prototypes will be 4 German Army (Wermacht) mini-figs. This set is going to be a mis-mash of colors, costumes, and weapons, but we hope to have this up soon. The first prototype we actually finished completed last week. My 8 year old son made this mini-fig of a Nazi soldier. Pictured here. He has an SS logo on his helmet and he is carrying a German MP40 sub maschinegewehr.
